Here are 5 tips that will help you survive assessment and rating. Like most things in life, the more organised and prepared you are, the better!
1. Keep your QIP up to date
This is key to a smooth assessment and rating experience. Sure, day-to-day is crazy busy in centres but prioritising the QIP will ensure you won’t experience that last minute flurry and have to fake up documentation.
2. Communicate with staff
There is nothing worse for a Director than having a staff member unknowingly contradict what you have told an Assessing Officer on the day. Make sure you communicate with your staff! You know what ‘weak spots’ are in your service, so give them the attention they deserve.
3. Put up a fight
Try and comprehend this – the assessing officer visiting your service may be very inexperienced and may only have had the minimum 5 day training required to wear the badge.
Then couple this with the fact that the sustainability content in the training itself is simple, and what you have is potential for ill-informed officers with more badge than brains – and unfortunately a system of assessment that supports them.
If you honestly feel they have made a wrong call, make sure you raise it then and there and document it and follow up after the visit.

My least favourite urban myth is that you can’t eat eggs laid by chickens because of the salmonella. Salmonella is present in the gut of all chooks – even the caged chickens who lay eggs with antibiotics and chemicals in them you can buy at the supermarket and which oddly enough pass all Australian health food standards. Being told you are not to eat or serve your centre grown organic fresh barn laid eggs is an absolute farce and you don’t have to accept it!
4. Actually give a damn
I know it’s an obvious one but you’ll be surprised how many people are nonchalant about the process. Maybe assessment and rating is a joke but remember the altruistic reason for its existence – to provide you with a continuing Quality Improvement Plan where you can reflect and improve on practices for the benefit of all, especially the children in your care.
5. Ask for help
If you are breaking under the weight of your numerous and varied tasks, go to your management and ask for help. Ask for extra staff, extra resources, extra time. Remind your management team how important this process is to the financial success of the business and to the public perception of their business in the community. Remember, your results are public knowledge and every business owner will understand the impact of goodwill on their business and if they don’t, well, get a new job.
